WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT?
At Academy Houses, we call it the “Cottage Concept.”
Many seniors simply do not want or need a nursing staff in their place of residence, preferring the now well-known advantages of “Assisted Living,” and the very smallest Assisted Living facilities like ours (called Residential Care Homes) offer even greater benefits: those cozy private and semi-private bedrooms, the cheerful and cottage-like dens and dining rooms, the pleasant sunrooms and patios, the small and simple floorplans. No crowds, no commotion, no one gets rushed, no one gets lost. Family visits take place in private areas, one “Med-Pass” nurse appears mornings and evenings to administer medications, and other nurses, doctors and therapists appear only when prescribed for individual residents by their doctors.
Three of the homes have maximum populations of 6 and one can accommodate 8. Trained and conscientious caregivers attend those residents 24 hours a day. Aromas from the kitchen bring the promise of wonderful home-cooked meals. Much like adult children caring for their own parents, our “cottage caregivers” are the epitome of concern and patience, gently coaxing reluctant newcomers out of their rooms to enjoy the company of their new acquaintances, or encouraging gradual improvement in ambulation, or converting resistant eaters by cheerfully urging “a little bit more…a little bit more.”
From those first fearful steps come higher and higher levels of confidence, and many times from “a little bit more” come hearty appetites and increased energy. Such “treatment” is not medical; it’s just care.
